One other good reason to write your own game engine is to teach yourself about
how game engines work. This is time consuming though, so I agree with Paul that
you shouldn't do this unless you really need to.

There are a bunch of game engines for GNU/Linux that aren't Unity. Many of
these also run on the other platforms.

It is pretty amazing as it allows collaborative editing of 3d and textures over
the network. Looks like it hasn't been developed since 2007 though. :( Here are
