The truly astonishing thing is that they made so much money in what was
traditionally considered a low-margins game of hardware. They certainly didn't
do it the Microsoft way by selling only bits and bytes. It seems to me that
they basically did this by refusing to compete in the same space as the other
companies, e.g. on margins, and instead became the premium product - the Dolce
and Gabbana, or perrier of technology.

The smartphone market is in a really great competitive equilibrium right now. I
hope it continues.
