Hi Chris,
It's certainly possible for people to be a net negative on the team, if they
need a lot of mentoring.
That said, way back in 1997 when I started at Ratbag, they hired about 7
programmers (including me) who were at uni / just finished uni, and while it was
chaotic, somehow it worked and we managed to produce something. I think the key
thing was that all of us had done a lot of programming for fun in our spare
time, so we all knew how to code (even if we lacked the wisdom of experience).
So yes, it will be a bit of an experiment... and highly dependent on finding the
right person I think.
