Have a look at Construct as well. It's made here.
We used to teach GameMaker and it's an excellent prototyping tool.
Torque2D shouldn't be passed on either.

I'm not too familiar with any programs aside from Unity, so I
can't offer too much assistance here. However, as for what
program you should/shouldn't use, I'd say use something you were
familiar with if this is the first time you've made a game.
Gamemaker, while yes it is basic, can still provide you with a
solid platform to flesh out your idea. If you have some coding
experience or are looking to start learning a platform, I'm sure
one of the other pigmiers can direct you to something that would
help. You could look at Flash as well, though that is a bit out
of my depth.

been really wanting to work on my own point and click
adventure for a while, it'd be a nice excuse to do some
writing and drawing, not to mention just a big thrill to
make something in the genre of game which i grew up on.

Anyway, my issue and question is about the actual game... I
can do writing and artwork but what would be the best way to
come at this? I know my way around gamemaker but i feel like
it would be frowned upon to make it in gamemaker. Does
anyone have any comments on the matter?
