I've used a 3rd party importer for a laptop before (not a mac):

They charge 5% plus a reshipping fee, but it will reduce that gap from $1000
to a couple of hundred. You kind of sneak it past customs with private
shipping so no tariffs etc. Not too sure if that is technically legal
though.
