Bodie,
I'm not too familiar with any programs aside from Unity, so I can't offer
too much assistance here. However, as for what program you should/shouldn't
use, I'd say use something you were familiar with if this is the first time
you've made a game. Gamemaker, while yes it is basic, can still provide you
with a solid platform to flesh out your idea. If you have some coding
experience or are looking to start learning a platform, I'm sure one of the
other pigmiers can direct you to something that would help. You could look
at Flash as well, though that is a bit out of my depth.
